John Deere L History

The 1937 John Deere Model L tractor was designed in Dubuque, Iowa, unlike other John Deere tractors. It was a compact one-plow row-crop tractor, unlike previous Deere models.

A Hercules two-cylinder engine positioned in line, rather than transversely, was connected to a three-speed Ford transmission and mounted far forward above the wide-set front wheels in the John Deere L. A distinct empty gap existed between the engine and the operator.

Late 1938 models had Henry Dreyfuss cowlings and grilles like other Deere tractors. Instead of the Hercules, the L got a John Deere engine in 1940, while the LA got 14 horsepower. The LA gave the L line power takeoff. The L and LA were made simultaneously. Only gasoline-powered Ls and LAs.

L tractors had specific plowing, mowing, and cultivating accessories including a high-clearance version. A lower, wider industrial variant, the LI, was developed in 1941 as a mower. John Deere L production concluded in 1946 with 13,365 units.
